Applications of Synthetic Diamonds as Precision Cutting Tools

Author:

Precision machining refers to a range of processes that achieve higher machining accuracy and surface finish than the fine‑finishing stages of conventional methods. The cutting tools employed in precision machining are known as precision tools. Synthetic diamond, with its exceptionally high Mohs hardness, relatively low cost, and excellent physical properties, is frequently used to manufacture such tools, which are deployed in precision and ultra‑precision machining operations.

Precision machining processes refer to techniques that achieve machining accuracies and surface finishes superior to those of the corresponding finishing operations. The cutting tools employed in precision machining are known as precision tools. Synthetic diamonds, owing to their exceptionally high Mohs hardness, relatively low cost, and excellent physical properties, are frequently fabricated into precision cutting tools for use in precision and ultra‑precision machining.

Precision diamond cutting tools typically come in the following types:

1. Precision diamond chamfering and high‑gloss cutting tools. These precision diamond tools are commonly used in applications such as digital camera housings, DVD/VCD/audio‑system knobs, furniture decorative components, and digital camera lenses. The precision diamond high‑gloss chamfering tool, which employs a single‑sided welding process, is suitable for chamfering the housings of mobile phones and tablets, delivering burr‑free, scratch‑free results while ensuring excellent chip evacuation and enabling a mirror‑like high‑gloss finish.

2. Precision diamond turning tools and precision diamond inserts. Precision diamond inserts are commonly used for die-cast aluminum components in the automotive industry. The carbide‑based substrates of these CNC‑indexable inserts, embedded with single‑crystal diamond grains, can replace the inserts on existing tool holders and offer sharper cutting edges than sintered diamond. They also provide excellent thermal dissipation, making dry and semi‑dry machining of die‑cast aluminum alloys much more straightforward and enabling significant cost reductions. Precision diamond turning tools, on the other hand, are custom‑made forming turning tools tailored to customer specifications, delivering high‑precision cuts with both the nose radius and surface waviness tightly controlled within narrow tolerances.

3. Precision Surgical Blades: Synthetic diamond is used to manufacture surgical blades that can cut human tissues with greater precision, thereby reducing surgical trauma and bleeding.

4. Wire-cutting tools: Wire cutting is a metal‑cutting process that uses electrical discharge erosion. Diamond wire‑cutting tools offer high precision and efficiency and are widely used in the manufacturing industry.

Overall, synthetic diamonds are widely used as precision cutting tools, spanning industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and electronics.
