A Comparison Between Lab-Grown Diamonds and Natural Diamonds Produced by Diamond-Deposition Equipment
Author:
Cultivated diamonds are gem-quality, large single-crystal diamonds produced synthetically. Diamond’s chemical composition is carbon (C), and it is an allotrope of carbon; its density is 3.52 g/cm³, and its hardness ranks at 10 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest substances known to humankind. Diamonds can be classified into two types: natural diamonds and synthetic diamonds.
Comparison of Lab-Grown Diamonds and Natural Diamonds Produced by Diamond Deposition Equipment
Cultivated diamonds are gem-quality, large single-crystal diamonds produced synthetically. Diamond is composed of carbon (C) and is one of carbon’s allotropes; it has a density of 3.52 g/cm³ and a Mohs hardness of 10, making it the hardest known material to date. Diamonds are classified into natural diamonds and synthetic diamonds. Natural diamonds are rare, valuable non-metallic minerals with limited reserves and challenging extraction processes, primarily found in countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Zaire, Australia, and Russia. Global annual production of natural diamonds ranges from approximately 90 million to 100 million carats, with gem‑grade diamonds accounting for about 17%–20% of the total. Synthetic diamonds, on the other hand, are high‑quality, large single crystals created through scientific methods that replicate the crystallization conditions and growth environment of natural diamonds. Today, they are widely used in the diamond‑consumption market to craft engagement rings, necklaces, earrings, and other diamond jewelry and fashion accessories.

For natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds offer a viable alternative. Lab-grown diamonds possess identical physicochemical properties to natural diamonds, with comparable performance in crystal structure integrity, transparency, refractive index, and dispersion—qualities that place them on par with natural diamonds. Both lab-grown and natural diamonds are genuine diamonds, fundamentally distinct from imitation stones such as moissanite (silicon carbide) and cubic zirconia. In terms of product characteristics, lab-grown diamonds are indistinguishable from natural diamonds; the two can only be differentiated through microscopic examination.
Compared with natural diamonds formed through geological processes, lab‑grown diamonds offer controllable characteristics—such as clarity, size, and color—through optimized growth techniques and precise parameter management. Moreover, they boast significant advantages in production efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability, particularly as global rough diamond output has been declining while consumer demand for diamond jewelry remains robust. Consequently, lab‑grown diamond jewelry, with its superior qualities, competitive pricing, and eco‑friendly, technology‑driven attributes, is poised to capture an ever‑growing share of the diamond market.

Adhesion Strength Testing of Diamond Films on Silicon Carbide Substrates
Diamond films, owing to their exceptional hardness, thermal conductivity, and chemical stability, are often bonded to silicon carbide substrates to form composite functional materials. The interfacial bonding strength between the two directly determines the service life of the composite under real‑world operating conditions, and the methods for its measurement as well as the interpretation of the results carry significant engineering implications.
